Pr. Ricardo Izquierdo on Le code Chastenay

Le code Chastenay

Professor Ricardo Izquierdo, member of the NanoQAM and CoFaMIC research centers, will participate in the scientific magazine Le code Chastenay which will be broadcast on Tuesday September 15, 2015 at 7 p.m. on Télé-Québec.

Water, algae and a mini-lab

To find out if the water in a river is polluted, samples must be taken and analyzed in the laboratory, a process that takes several days. Thanks to researchers from UQAM, the analysis can now be done directly on the shore in a few minutes. To achieve this, biologist Philippe Juneau and microelectronics expert Ricardo Izquierdo have pooled their expertise. Result: a mini laboratory that combines electronics and living algae. Like all plants, these algae do photosynthesis. However, the pollutants present in the water will disturb this process and produce a signal that the electronics can detect. A great idea and … years of hard work!
